This commission required a tight balance of a few important needs. They had a moderate budget, and wanted a natural edge walnut slab top (and those can be pricey). They wanted it to be as shallow as possible but still have clearance inside to contain their A/V equipment. And, since this commission was for my parents, it had to be perfect.
I had managed to find a short stack of matched walnut boards at an estate sale a year previously, and after a few false starts I found a perfect slab for the top at a reasonable price at my favorite lumber yard.
The vision was for the clean slab top to be offset by the beautiful dripping grain of the matched door fronts. Tapered legs with a gently curved top softened the design and provided strong frames for the door fronts. Hand-carved wooden handles on the doors added the final touch.
